The Iconography of Our Lady of Peñafrancia
"Madre y Reina"
(A Reflection on the Iconography of Our Lady of Peñafrancia)
When we look at the image of the Blessed Mother as Our Lady of Peñafrancia, we see her as a queen adorned in all her splendor. Yet beneath the regal symbols lies a deeper truth—she is not only a queen but, above all, a mother.
The crown on her head signifies more than her queenship; it is a symbol of our love and acceptance of her as our mother. Her manto (cloak) is not merely a royal cape but a sign of her protective care. Under the Manto of Ina, we find comfort and feel the tender embrace of her maternal love.
Finally, as we behold the Child Jesus in her arms, we are reminded not only of her role as the Mother of God but also of her role as our spiritual mother—leading us closer to Christ with her gentle guidance.
Let us always turn to Ina with trust and devotion, knowing she carries us lovingly under her mantle.
Viva la Virgen!
